When being capable becomes the expectation

You're someone who gets things done.

When something needs to be handled, you handle it. You keep track of what needs to happen, solve problems as they come up, and find a way through when things get difficult. Other people may see you as dependable, organized, or someone who manages well under pressure.

And most of the time, they're probably right.

Being capable can be something you value about yourself. It may have helped you navigate difficult periods, take care of people you love, build a career, or manage a life with a lot of moving pieces.

But being capable can also quietly become an expectation.

You know you've handled difficult things before, so when something feels hard now, your first response may be to keep going. You rearrange things. Find another solution. Make room for one more responsibility. Tell yourself you'll deal with how tired you are once things settle down.

The problem is that being able to handle something doesn't necessarily tell you what it costs to keep handling it.

You can be getting everything done and still feel stretched thin. You can show up for the people who depend on you and have very little left afterward. You can manage something well and still wish you didn't have to manage quite so much of it.

Capability and capacity aren't always the same thing.

When you're used to being capable, it can be surprisingly difficult to recognize when you're reaching your capacity. There may not be an obvious moment when everything falls apart. Instead, things can become gradually heavier. You may have less patience. Small decisions may take more effort. Things you normally enjoy may start feeling like one more demand on your time.

When you're used to handling things, it can be difficult to know when you're carrying too much. There may always be a way to make it work, push through, or find a little more to give. But being able to do that can make it harder to recognize when something has become unsustainable.

The question isn't always whether you can keep going. Sometimes it's whether continuing this way is asking too much of you.

You don't have to stop being capable to acknowledge that something is taking a lot out of you. Both can be true at the same time.

You can be handling it.

And it can still be heavy.
